I went to see the History is now exhibition at the Hayward gallery. This exhibition sought to portray the last 70 years of Britain's history through 7 artists. I thought that was a brilliant idea because the elections were not far away as well.
I really liked certain individual pieces and films. Especially John Akomfrah's film which was a performance piece. It was very powerful and left me in an unsettled mood. The performance suggested a notion of struggle, oppression and being thrown in an uncomfortable position. A plea for help. The shapes the performer kept making were very striking. The stark area behind the performer reminded me of the texture of the tunnels in CapeCoast Castle, Ghana. It sought to explore black identity in Britain
Stuart Brisley installation was another favourite of mine. The installation was a big cage filled with 66 blown up leather gloves, each one representing the 66,666 people that were out of work. The connotations were very powerful. I really like the fact that it was made to look bloated rather than flat.It reminded me of the women who helped in the war.
I felt like the entire exhibition was stacked with too much work. It was very exhausting and I felt like too much information was being thrown at me. My brain was definitely over worked and I probably spent about 2 hours or more in the exhibition.
