BITE YOUR TONGUE - LEON GOLUB

This was the first time I had heard about Leon Golub and seen his work at the serpentine gallery.I was blown away by the size and subject matter of the painting. The colours and really aggressive brush strokes revealed how sensitive he felt about inequality and the abuse of power. The hand gestures and structure of most compositions were very striking.

I am not sure whether he ripped bits of the painting because of the title of the show ''bite your tongue'' OR whether the gallery named the show ''bite your tongue'' because of how exposing his paintings were, as well as the ripped out part. If any of these are the case then I feel that the artist / gallery did not need to underline those facts with the pieces/ name of the show.

The texts on some paintings were very powerful. One thing I really enjoyed and took from the show was the use of space and the redefinition of objects to make them clear.
